Howard University
Howard University is one of 48 U.S. private, doctoral/research-extensive
universities and comprises 12 schools and colleges.
Founded in 1867, the university educates approximately
11,000 students in more than 120 areas leading to undergraduate,
graduate and professional degrees. The university has
five campuses throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan
area and boasts of distinguished alumni such as Nobel
Laureate Toni Morrison, American College of Surgeons
President Dr. LaSalle Leffall and the late Supreme Court
Justice Thurgood Marshall. Since 1998, the University
has produced two Rhodes Scholars, a Truman Scholar,
seven Fulbright Scholars and nine Pickering Fellows.
Howard also produces more on-campus African-American
Ph.D.s than any other university in the world.
As part of its seven-year plan to improve campus infrastructure
reliability, life safety, and indoor air quality, Howard
University enrolled Constellation Energy's Projects &
Services Group (CEPS) to develop and execute a multi-phase
improvement project for selected buildings. During the
ongoing execution of this project, CEPS has been and
will be replacing major HVAC equipment, installing variable
frequency drives, replacing motor control centers, retrofitting
lighting systems, and installing fire sprinkler/alarm
systems. In addition, new DDC building management systems
are being integrated into each building along with network
capabilities for a campus wide building monitoring and
management system.
To date, Constellation has completed
improvement programs in four buildings. Infrastructure
improvements are also being undertaken at five
additional buildings, and plans are currently underway
for programs at two more sites. Altogether,
Constellation expects to have completed nine building
projects by the end of 2008. And thanks to a carefully
constructed schedule process, disruptions to the
university’s campus life have been kept to a minimum as
improvements are phased in throughout the academic year.
By providing crucial infrastructure solutions,
Constellation enables Howard University to continue its
quest for equally important human solutions.
