Jefferson Health Systems
Jefferson Health System is a non-profit corporate entity
that provides quality health care in a cost-effective
manner through a comprehensive integrated health care
delivery system. Members include founders Jefferson
University Hospitals and Main Line Health System, the
Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, Frankford Health
Care System, and Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. System
members provide patient care through more than 30 hospitals,
medical centers, and primary, specialty and ambulatory
care facilities throughout southeastern Pennsylvania
and southern New Jersey.
In
1999, a master energy services agreement (MESA) was
executed between CEPS and Jefferson Health System. The
MESA spelled out how energy projects were to be evaluated,
as well as other contractual terms. The next step was
to perform preliminary energy audits of the facilities.
Once measures were identified, the System then decided
which measures were to be studied in detail.
CEPS
identified lighting upgrades as a primary opportunity
for significant energy and operational savings. For
example, the recommended and implemented energy conservation
measures in lighting upgrades (including T8 lamps, fluorescent
lamps, and electronic ballasts) at five Jefferson University
Hospital buildings alone reduced electrical costs by
seven percent, for savings of more than $256,400 annually.
CEPS
created greater infrastructure efficiencies by replacing
the entire boiler control system and installing a low
NOx burner at the Einstein Medical Center’s 100,000-pound-per-hour
steam plant. Water conservation measures identified
and put into place save more than 15 million gallons
and 1,500 MMBtu of water heating annually. More than
$70,000 of additional savings were captured in condensate
heat recovery.
With
a total cost of $7.8 million, the project’s nearly
40 initiatives at nine different System hospitals and
several satellite sites created annual savings of $1.4
million.
CEPS facilitated the financing of $6.7
million in upgrades and improvements to Jefferson University
Hospital and Albert Einstein Medical Center through
its Energy Services Project Agreement, allowing for
project costs to be paid from savings realized from
the upgrades. Main Line Health System and Frankford
Health Care System projects totaling $1.1 million were
paid for directly through cash disbursements.
